How important is essential oil storage? When it comes to storing your essential oils, there are a few guidelines to keep in mind. We’ve outlined the basics below:
1. Store your essential oils in dark-colored glass bottles. Typically any oils you purchase from a store or order online will already come in a dark glass bottle, so you’ll have what you need from the start. If you’re experimenting by making new essential oil blends or beauty concoctions, you may want to keep extra dark glass bottles, in various sizes, on hand for this purpose. Avoid plastic storage containers.
2. Keep your essential oils in a cool, dry place to give them the longest shelf-life possible. If you have children or pets, it’s a good idea to keep your essential oil collection well out of reach. Remember that even a tiny amount of an essential oil, when swallowed, can be fatal.
3. Keep essential oils for about two years. Many essential oils will last longer than that if they are stored properly in a cool, dark, dry place – and if they are sealed tightly. A few oils, especially citrus essential oils, can degrade over time the more they’re exposed to oxygen. These oils typically have a shorter shelf-life of about a year.
