When severe emotional stress piles on top of all of the usual challenges of life, especially in our technological, sedentary culture where ancient “flight” impulses often rear their heads with nowhere to run, our adrenals can become taxed and exhausted, and our ability to hold strength for the long haul is diminished. Divorce, separation, loss of a loved one, even intractable financial difficulty: all qualify as deep stressors that can shake our reserves and immune systems to the core. Best to head this downward spiral off at the pass with a quick, restorative aromatherapy treatment. I’ve found Lavender and Lemon to be two of the loveliest essential oils to use for comfort during difficult times, as reliable allies to get one through the darkest hours.
Lavender (lavandula angustifolia) essential oil acts to deeply calm and soothe the mind, allowing one to feel cradled in comfort while promoting a good night’s sleep if that has been elusive. It also clarifies and tones the skin while decreasing redness for a calm, clear complexion. Try an Epsom salts bath (1c.) with ten drops of high-quality lavender essential oil. Many facial moisturizers, hand lotions and toners for the complexion now contain lavender essential oil and extracts of good quality; Avalon Organics® has a nice line that can help you to feel constantly enveloped in the emotional reassurance that lavender can bring. The effects of its volatile oils are immediate, and can be felt by merely sniffing the opened essential oil bottle, or by using 10 drops in an ounce of carrier oil (almond or jojoba) and massaging into the wrists or temples.
Lemon (citrus limon) contains limonenes that help to uplift your emotions, allowing a brightening of the consciousness and a willingness to see the good in almost any situation. Try filling a large stainless steel bowl with boiling water and then adding 4 drops of high-quality lemon essential oil or, if your budget will allow, a capful of Dr. Hauschka® Lemon Bath. Stir gently to diffuse the oil and dilute its potency, so there is no chance of it burning your skin; essential oils are highly concentrated! Then dip a washcloth into the lemon-infused water, pulling it out with tongs to protect your hands from the heat, and carefully wring it out before applying it to your face. Lean back and feel the tension and strain literally drain from your body. When the washcloth cools down, renew it in the hot water; this should be good for 3-4 applications. The experience is really unparalleled in its ability to refresh and restore the mind to a brighter outlook; and, as a side benefit, it will also cleanse and detoxify your skin, helping to clear and brighten the complexion.
Keep these two allies by your side during times of strain, and by escaping into the separate world they offer, you’re sure to find the strength and clarity to get through the toughest of times.
