When it comes to life’s little emergencies and everyday ailments, a well-stocked aromatherapy first aid kit can go a long way. Whether you’re dealing with cuts, scrapes, bruises, burns, or bites, below is our list of seven essential oils that’ll save the day.
“The Essential Seven” Aromatherapy Oils
- Chamomile
- Clove
- Eucalyptus
- Lavender
- Peppermint
- Rosemary
- Tea Tree
- Bee stings = chamomile. Soothe the sting with a cold compress of chamomile essential oil. To make a cold compress, fill a bowl with ice-cold water and add 2-3 drops of chamomile essential oil. Dip a small towel into the bowl, wring it out, and press it against the affected area.
- Spider bites = chamomile + lavender. Dilute 2 drops of chamomile and 3 drops of lavender essential oil in a teaspoon of alcohol. Blend well and apply to the bite.
- Cuts and Wounds = lavender + tea tree. Add 2 drops of tea tree and 5 drops of lavender essential oil to a small bowl of warm water, blend well, and use it to carefully clean the wound. You can apply a couple drops of undiluted lavender essential oil to the affected area each day until it begins to heal.
- Burns = lavender. Apply 2-3 drops of undiluted lavender essential oil to a first-degree burn to help speed healing and ward off scarring.
- Headaches = chamomile, rosemary, peppermint, or lavender. To ease a headache, try Roman chamomile, rosemary, peppermint, or lavender essential oil. You can use any of these oils in a massage blend for the head, neck, and shoulders; in an icy compress applied to the head; or simply as an inhalation. You can also apply 1 drop of rosemary or lavender essential oil to the back of the neck.
- Toothaches = clove or peppermint. To soothe a toothache, apply 1-2 drops of peppermint or clove essential oil directly to the tooth. Do not overuse the clove essential oil, as it can lead to gum damage. And if the toothache persists, please see a dentist.
- Colds = lavender. Lavender helps boost the immune system and can bolster your defenses against the common cold. Use it in a bath, as a massage oil, or simply inhale its lovely scent.
- Congestion = eucalyptus. Eucalyptus is nature’s decongestant. Breathe it in deeply: the vapors will help clear up any mucus.
