Essential oils are incredibly effective when applied externally. Below, we’ve listed our favorite ways to incorporate aromatherapy into your day, whether through rejuvenating massage, a relaxing foot soak, or a soothing bath. Go ahead; indulge in a bit of pampering – it’s all in the name of good health!
Aromatherapy Bath. It’s been a long day. Do you: throw yourself on the couch, remote in hand; make it better with a box of truffles; or dim the lights and dip into a sensual bath? You know the answer. Add no more than eight drops of an essential oil to the bath, and let the day’s wear and tear melt away. For an aphrodisiac blend, use three drops each of vetiver and ylang ylang essential oils with one drop of mandarin essential oil.
Aromatherapy Shower. No bathtub, no problem. You can simply stand under hot running water and let aromatic steam work wonders on your soul. Just infuse a bath sponge with a few drops of essential oil and treat yourself to an invigorating rub-down. For energy, try blending two drops of peppermint, four drops of rosemary, and two drops of juniper essential oil.
Aromatherapy Foot Soak. You walked so far in those brand new shoes, but now all you have is a tired set of feet in need of some TLC. Find a large bowl or bucket, fill it with warm water, and add up to six drops of essential oil. Lavender and sweet marjoram essential oil help relieve the exhaustion. Bliss!
Aromatherapy Compress. You can use a hot or cold compress to apply essential oils directly to an area of your body. Add about six drops of an essential oil to a cup of water. Dip a clean towel into the water, wring it, and then press against the area that needs to be treated. A hot compress is great for muscle pain, cramps, and toothaches. Cold compresses work well on sprains, headaches, fevers, and swelling.
Aromatherapy Massage. Remember, Hippocrates (the father of medicine himself!) recommended daily aromatherapy massage for good health – and we’re not questioning this doctor’s orders! Recruit a willing partner and have them work the oil into your skin in a gentle, rhythmic motion. Jasmine, chamomile, and lavender are a great blend for chasing away stress. Just dilute them in good quality carrier oil first, like sweet almond, grapeseed, sunflower, or coconut oil. Use no more than 3% essential oil in a massage blend.
