What are Aromatherapy Costs to get started? You might be surprised. Aromatherapy products that you make yourself – especially beauty products, cleaning products, and perfumes – are remarkably affordable when compared to their store-bought counterparts. That’s because you’re going straight to the source – nature – for all your needs. You don’t have to pay extra for any unpronounceable chemicals, preservatives, packaging, marketing, and shelf space.
Basic Building Blocks of Aromatherapy
The basic building blocks of aromatherapy are essential oils and carrier oils. From those, you can create a variety of things, from moisturizers and room refreshers to pest deterrents and in-a-pinch first aid supplies.
As we discuss in our Is Aromatherapy Good for Beginners? section, you really only need one oil to get started, and can build your repertoire from there. In fact, one little bottle of an essential oil can last you a while! This is because when you use an essential oil, you typically only use a few drops of it, whether you add those drops to a massage blend, aromatic bath, or a diffuser. Essential oils are remarkably effective in tiny doses.
Essential Oil Prices – Aromatherapy Costs
That said, essential oils can vary considerably in price. That’s because each essential oil is different, and is extracted through different means. You may have read in our What is Aromatherapy? section, for example, that a single ounce of rose oil demands sixty thousand rose blossoms. Jasmine essential oil is equally tricky to extract: the jasmine blossoms must be picked by hand the first day they bloom, before the sun destroys their precious oils forever. As a result, rose otto and jasmine essential oils have traditionally been more expensive.
On the other hand, some oils are easier to produce than others. Eucalyptus and grapefruit essential oils, just to name a couple, are more readily available – and that is reflected in the cost.
This big variation in Aromatherapy Costs can be daunting at first, but there are resources available to help you navigate through the maze.
You have a Choice on your Aromatherapy Costs
When it comes to aromatherapy, what you spend is up to you. You don’t need to spend a fortune, although you certainly can. For beginners, a few bottles of well-chosen essential oils (see our Top Essential Oils for Everyday Use section) can meet most of your needs, and at a modest cost. As your knowledge of aromatherapy expands, you may want to start adding more precious oils to your collection, but it’s definitely not a requirement!
