Splish splash, time to spice up that bath! An aromatherapy bath is a wonderful way to indulge in the aroma and healing powers of essential oils. As the sanctuary in the heart of the home, it is a place to get rid of old cares and start anew. There’s no better way to set that mood than with carefully chosen essential oil solutions for the bath, from salts to body scrubs. As you let the day slip away, the essential oils you use in the bath will permeate your skin, energize your inner body, enhance your emotions, and leave you with a pleasant scent.
Here are three great ways you can enjoy aromatherapy in the bath:
Basic Aromatherapy Bath
It doesn’t get any easier than an aromatherapy bath. Just add 4-6 drops of your favorite essential oil to the bathwater and step right in! You can add a splash of milk or a carrier oil to help disperse it through the bath. Keep the water temperature pleasantly warm: if the water is so hot you’re sweating, your skin can’t absorb the oils as easily.
Aromatherapy Bath Salts
Bath salts are used to draw toxins out of the body, tone the skin, and refresh the spirit. They’re especially nice in the bath after a long day at work or after a particularly demanding workout. To create aromatherapy bath salts, simply add a couple of drops of your favorite essential oil to a blend that is:
- part baking soda
- parts Epsom salts
- parts sea salt
Then, mix everything together and add to the tub. (A good rule of thumb: use 2 drops of essential oil for every ounce of bath salts). Ahh, bliss!
Aromatherapy Body Scrubs
For skin that’s silky, glowing, and smooth, use aromatherapy body scrubs in the bath. You can easily make them by combining a few drops of essential oil with a carrier oil and either salt or sugar. You can even add texture and color to your homemade scrub with dried flowers, seeds, or food coloring! Not sure whether to use salt or sugar? Here’s a tip: salt is a great exfoliator, while sugar is a little bit gentler.
Below are the basic measurements for a salt or sugar aromatherapy scrub:
- 1 cup of salt or sugar
- 1/4 cup of a carrier oil, like sweet almond oil
- 6-8 drops of an essential oil, like lavender
- 1 cup of dried flowers, if you’re using them (dried lavender flowers are a nice complement to a lavender essential oil scrub).
